Wedding Policies
Congratulations on your upcoming marriage! A Service of Christian Marriage is
one of the most sacred worship services at University United Methodist Church.
We approach the planning of such a service with the reverence befitting the
occasion where two persons enter into holy union before God. By showing interest
in our church, you are affirming that you want your wedding to have the proper
religious significance and that all aspects of the wedding service will reflect
this orientation to the glory of God.
It is our desire that your wedding be beautiful and meaningful. It is also our
commitment that every service of worship be profoundly spiritual in its content
and atmosphere. To that end, please read the following carefully, noting that
any restrictions are not intended to limit your joy but to enhance the worship
of God.
MAKING THE RESERVATION
The bridal couple may check available wedding dates by telephone with the
church’s Wedding Coordinator.
Weddings may be scheduled on Saturdays until 3:00 p.m. if the reception is held
at the church, or 6:00 p.m. if the reception is held elsewhere. Rehearsals are
generally scheduled the evening before the wedding.
The fee for UUMC members is $800.00. The fee for non-members is $1250.00.
THE WEDDING COORDINATOR
University United Methodist Church provides a Wedding Coordinator who oversees
the details necessary to ensure that your wedding rehearsal and ceremony are
carried out according to your wishes and in accordance with the church
guidelines and procedures.
THE MINISTER
The Pastor of University UMC approves all plans for weddings celebrated here.
Unless the bridal couple wishes to have their own clergy officiate the wedding,
our pastor will conduct the wedding ceremony.
If the bridal couple wishes to have their own clergy to officiate in the
service, the liturgy must be approved by the UUMC pastor.
Premarital counseling sessions with the pastor are an important part of
preparing for your married life together. These sessions will be scheduled at
times that are convenient for all parties, as much as possible.
All weddings must follow the Service of Christian Marriage, found in the United
Methodist Hymnal at page 864. A copy of this service is available. Personal,
ethnic, and cultural traditions are encouraged and may be incorporated into the
service at the discretion of the pastor.
MUSIC
Please schedule a consultation with the Organist as soon as possible to discuss
the music selections for your wedding.
Musical selections must be approved by the Organist and will be considered for
their appropriateness for a service of worship at University UMC. Taped music or
accompaniment tracks are not used.
THE REHEARSAL
The bridal couple should make sure that all members of the wedding party,
including ushers, are present in order for the rehearsal to begin promptly as
scheduled.
FLOWERS AND DECORATIONS
Displays and arrangements should be discussed with the Wedding Coordinator.
Decorations may not be attached to the pews or other furnishings by pinning,
gluing, nailing, or tacking.
When candles are used, they must be the dripless variety and must be in
candelabra which catch and contain the drippings in order to protect the floor.
Bows and hurricane lamps may be used on the end of the pews in the center aisle,
but they must be secured in ways that protect the wood. No masking tape or
floral tape is to be used.
If the church is decorated for the season of Advent, Christmas, or Easter, these
decorations cannot be disturbed or removed.
CHANCEL FURNISHINGS
None of the chancel furnishings (Altar, Pulpit, Baptismal Font, Paschal Candle,
Lectern) are to be moved for the wedding ceremony. The Bible and cross will
remain on the altar.
The church has available for use at no charge:
a kneeling bench (prie dieux)
a white altar cloth
two brass candle lighters.
The church has two brass floor candelabra available upon request.
PHOTOGRAPHS
All flash photographs are to be taken either before or after the service of
worship. Photographs taken before the wedding must be concluded no later than 30
minutes before the scheduled beginning of the service. All wedding participants
should report to the Wedding Coordinator 30 minutes before the appointed hour.
Photographs during the actual service are to be shot without flash, floodlights
or shutter noise. Ushers are to inform guests with cameras that pictures may not
be taken during the wedding ceremony.
During the processional, the photographer may take flash pictures.
VIDEOTAPE RECORDING
Videotape recording during the wedding may occur from a fixed location in the
balcony or from an unmanned and fixed position in the choir loft behind the
pulpit. No extra lighting is to be used.
MISCELLANEOUS
• The church’s nursery facilities are not available during rehearsals, weddings,
or receptions.
• Only bird-seed, soap bubbles, or similar materials should be used to “shower”
the bride and groom as they depart and only outside the building. Items such as
confetti or rice are not to be used.
