Pastor's Welcome

People come to University United Methodist Church in all kinds of ways.  My story is one of hundreds.  I stepped into the building of this church for the first time on a sunny Sunday morning in September 1962.  I was as green as they came—a freshman at the university from a small church in a small town, threatened and awed by my new environment, and tentative in everything I did.  My goal was just to survive that first semester.

I had no idea what lay ahead of me.  I had no idea that within weeks I would witness one of the first campus protests in Oklahoma, would be swept up into the civil rights movement, would undergo a considerable makeover of my belief system in a few short months, and would spend the rest of that decade on campuses that were rocked by unrest and violence.  Welcome to the 1960s!

I would have been absolutely thunderstruck if someone had told me on that September morning that 25 years later I would be the person in the University Church pulpit or that 47 years later I would return to that pulpit for a second time!  But all of this is true.

Many people have been in this worshiping community much longer than I have been.  Some of them witnessed or took part in the construction of this building in the late 1930s and early ’40s.  The story of how the members constructed this building with their own hands is told in picture and narrative in the Heritage Room.

While people have come to this church in all kinds of ways, they have stayed for a few simple reasons.  This is a wonderful community of faith that is known for its quality of fellowship, its tolerance and diversity, and its involvement in a multitude of ministries that make a difference in the community, the university, and the world.  It is a great place for individuals and families to grow in the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ.

We invite you to join us for worship on any Sunday morning or just to come by for a visit.  We would love to answer your questions in person.

Blessings,

  Sandy Wylie, Pastor
